English Willow, Properly Graded
Cricket bat willow is graded by cleft — the raw wood block a bat is shaped from — based on the number, straightness, and evenness of its grains, along with freedom from blemishes.
Grade 1 clefts show the most visible straight grains (typically 8-12+) with a clean, unblemished face — the benchmark for professional-level bats. Grade 2 and 3 clefts have slightly fewer or less uniform grains, or minor natural blemishes, and perform just as well on the pitch — the difference is largely cosmetic. Lower grades trade some grain uniformity for value, without compromising the fundamentals of a well-pressed, well-shaped bat.
Grain count alone doesn’t determine performance — how the bat is pressed and shaped matters just as much. We grade and describe every bat honestly rather than inflating the grade to justify a price.
From Cleft To Ready-To-Play
Cleft Selection
Willow clefts are seasoned and inspected for grain quality, moisture content, and structural soundness before a single cut is made.
Shaping & Pressing
The blade is shaped and pressed to the correct density — too soft and it won’t last a season, too hard and it kills the ball’s pace off the bat.
Handle Splicing
The cane handle is spliced into the blade at a precise angle and bound for shock absorption — this joint takes the full force of every shot.
Knocking-In & Finishing
Before it’s ready for match use, every bat needs proper knocking-in to compress the fibres at the surface — we grade and finish every bat to be knock-in ready, not just shelf-ready.
Materials Across The Range
Gloves, pads, and balls use genuine leather where specified in the product listing — never a synthetic substitute passed off as leather.
Pad and guard density is chosen for genuine impact protection, not just to make a product feel heavier in the hand.
Stitching, binding, and grip work are checked for durability under repeated match use, not just a single photo-ready unboxing.
